Training these 3 Pyschic Abilities will Sharpen Your Writing

Welcome to your imagination, the most enchanted part of you. Your imagination tells you when you’re in love, when you’re in danger, and it tells you all about the book you need to write. It’s not just your imagination. Trust your imagination. Every invention, book, and business has been imagined into reality.

According to the chakras the manifestation of an idea moves from inspiration in the crown chakra to imagination in the sixth chakra, commonly called the third eye. What people don’t know about the third eye is the meaning. The symbol has two wings which represent the mind’s ability to perceive and to command. That’s right, the proper function of the imagination is to receive ideas and make them happen in the real world.

There’s a lot of psychedelic lore about the third eye but this is not an acid trip. It’s about developing the imagination, a huge asset that we’ve never been properly taught to use.

This comes from a heightened awareness of our interior senses. As children we learn all about how to use our senses to learn about the world outside ourselves, but we completely neglect the senses inside ourselves. For instance, the images we see when we dream, or the words we hear when we’re thinking, or how our mouths water and we can almost taste a certain food when we’re hungry for it.

Here I’ll focus on the three intuitive skills most relevant to writing a book. Intuitive information can be separated into different categories.  Maybe you've heard of some of them before:

·         clairvoyance: "clear seeing"

·         clairaudience: "clear hearing"

·         clairsentience: "clear feeling"

These terms refer to seeing, hearing, and feeling things that aren't part of our immediate environment. Basically, they’re the ways we engage our imagination and we all lead with some rather than others. We experience this when we pull up memories, plan for the future, or get lost in daydreams. These terms may sound mysterious until you realize that the human brain was made for imagination and it's a part of our very nature.

When you develop these skills within yourself you can better communicate to more readers. We all have natural leanings, but as a writer, when you learn to think in different ways you can reach more people. First recognize where you are. After reading about the 4 skills above, which do you lead with? Which could be strengthened? Below I’ve suggested two exercises for each “clair.” And you’ll see, this isn’t about straining to access some kind of ouija board communication from an unknown source, it’s about strengthening the imaginative abilities you already possess.

Clairvoyance: "Clear Seeing"

This is the ability to see things in your imagination. Many writers see their stories like a movie passing before their eyes. Notice when you use clairvoyance naturally. For instance, have you ever been looking for your keys and had a quick flash in your mind’s eye of the place you last saw them? You don’t close your eyes and concentrate. You don’t ommmm and summon the image. It’s so quick you could almost miss it , yet use use that faculty all the time. That’s how subtle these upper chakras are, it’s like a tissue of an image, and that’s also why it doesn’t really work when you try too hard. Those lower chakras take a lot of physical pushing and pulliing, but the upper chakras are fleeting and ephemeral.

Clairaudience: “Clear Hearing”

Many authors experience clairaudience when they hear new ideas, almost like listening to a voice. This is an opportunity to get to know your characters, or readers if you’re writing personal development. Sit down and write some questions you’d like to ask them and then listen for the response. I like to use this exercise while at an actual coffee house but, of course, this whole conversation takes place inside a notebook so as not to freak out the other patrons. Even if these characters are actual people from your life, get in their heads and try to understand them at a deeper level. Let them talk about whatever they want to talk about—their home, family, and job, as well as their hopes and dreams and nightmares. Don’t worry about how all this information is going to fit into the story, just let the ink flow with abundance, and you’ll be surprised at how seemingly random ideas can become useful.

Clairsentience: "Clear Feeling"

We use clairsentience all the time without knowing it, however, once we’re conscious of it we can improve our emotional intelligence and our creativity. There’s a stereotype of the hippie at a party who tells you what color your aura is. This isn’t like that. Okay, not exactly like that, just a little. We naturally know more about people than we articulate. Think of people and places you’re familiar with. What kind of feeling do they give off? What’s their temperament? Are they serious? Boisterous? Creepy? Calm? This might seem pretty basic to start out, but the more you practice, the more detailed and insightful this ability becomes.

The wisdom I take from the sixth chakra is that we have dreams in order to bring them down to earth. Practicing these exercises will not only strengthen each individual skill, it will strengthen your mind and give you more power to make your dreams happen.
